Children and education

All children and young people must have access to education within the school system. Education must give pupils knowledge and skills and, in combination with the home and promote their development.

The Education plan is one of the most important documents for education in Kungälv. Amongst other things, the plan specifies the areas that the municipality gives priority to, how much money has been allocated to the various education departments and what targets to be achieved.

Child care

Swedish child care has twin aims. One is to make it possible for parents to combine parenthood with employment or studies and the other is to support and encourage children's development and learning and help them grow up under conditions that are conducive to their well being. Along with the parental insurance and child benefit systems, child care has been a cornerstone of Swedish family welfare policy while at the same having an explicitly educational orientation. Swedish child care is based on an overall view of the child's development and learning needs bringing together health care, social care, fostering and teaching.

Kungälv’s child care is organised under three administrative units, Kusten, Västra Tullen and Inlands område. Pre-schools accept children from age 1-6 years old.

Compulsory school

In Sweden, all children between the ages of 7-16 must attend school. If the parents wish, a child can start school one year earlier, at the age of 6 years old. Municipalities have an obligation to provide a place for all 6-year-olds in a preschool class. Education is compulsory and free of charge. In the municipality of Kungälv compulsory school is organised in three administrative units, Kusten, Västra Tullen and Inlands område.

Kungälv also has compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities. Children with learning disabilities attend a special program for pupils with learning disabilities comprising 9 years in either compulsory- or
training school. Children with less severe learning disabilities attend the compulsory school, and students with more severe disabilities, such that they are unable to benefit from the education given in compulsory.
